Walking provides vital cardio vascular exercise which will assist in weight loss. If you commit to walking regularly, then not only will this help you to lose weight but at the same time you will feel and look great. Weight loss programs and exercise are complementary. Walking is a simple form of exercise and can be performed anywhere, any time without any specialized equipment.

If you intend to walk as a means of improving your fitness, first ensure that you are walking correctly. The correct way to walk for maximum benefit:

- Bend your elbows to 90 degrees. Swing your arms back and forth to add intensity.

- As you increase your walking speed, take faster and shorter steps.

- Don't slump. Keep your back straight and your shoulders back while you walk. With this posture you'll be able to breathe more easily and your shoulders, neck and back will be under less stress.

- Walk quickly i.e. briskly enough to cover about 3.5 miles (5.6Km) an hour. If you have the ability to cover one mile (1.6Km) in about fifteen minutes, then you're walking at the correct speed. You may have to build up to this.

- Monitor your walking intensity. You could pretend that you're going to be late for a meeting or need to catch a bus to help increase your momentum.

Follow each of these tips and be sure to walk for a minimum of thirty minutes. Where possible it is a good idea to include a few hills within your routine to increase the level of intensity. It is also recommended to change your walking destinations and paths from time to time. It's always interesting to check out new landscapes and scenery.

As your level of fitness improves increase the effectiveness of your exercise by walking faster and further. So don't worry if you have to start with much shorter, slower walks. You'll be surprised at how quickly your fitness improves.

Lack of fitness is primarily due to lack of exercise. This results in inefficiency of the body's energy system. If an overweight person is not fit he or she will be unable to run or jog to burn off calories. However, a daily walking program gradually increasing speed and distance will assist in both fat burning and improvement in fitness.

As you walk with weight loss as your goal, you may like to add some amusement to the routine. Take your dog to the park to spend some quality time together. Walk with friends. You could perhaps walk to the market or the mall to do your shopping instead of driving your car. What other exercise could be so effective in losing weight while at the same time having fun?
